Accessibility:
The design of products for people with disabilities.
Thinking about Disability
Medical Model
- "The handicapped"
- Other, different, special needs
- Design accessible versions
Social Model
- "People with disabilities"
- Disability affects all of us
- Design accessibly from the start
The Last Year and a Half
- Adopted WCAG 2.0 AA as our goal for all products
- Achieved it for InQuizitive
- Improved the workflow for authoring alt text and captions for all frontlist media
- Streamlined the disability request process
Current Obstacles
- Disparate, bespoke college standards
-
Outdated models of compliance (VPAT!)
- Forthcoming: AIM-HE Act, 508 refresh
- Poor understanding of accessibility across the industry
Looking to the Future
